EU allocates 6 million euros to boost agriculture in Uzbekistan

The European Union has provided Uzbekistan with a grant of 6 million euros for the implementation of the National Strategy for Food Security and Healthy Nutrition. In general, the EU will allocate 20 million euros to promote reforms in the agricultural sector this year and next.

On April 25, the European Union allocated 6 million euros (about 82 billion soums) to the government of Uzbekistan for agricultural reforms, the press service of the Delegation reported EU in Tashkent.

The grant will support the implementation of the National Food Security and Healthy Nutrition Strategy and program budgeting guidelines.

The agreement between the Government of Uzbekistan and the EU provides for the allocation of a total amount of 20 million euros to support the implementation Agricultural development strategies for 2020-2030. As part of this assistance, additional grant funds are expected to be received this year and next.

The main goal is to support Uzbekistan's transition to a market—oriented and sustainable agricultural sector, which provides more jobs and income for the population and increases access to safe and nutritious food.

"The agri-food sector is critically important for the economy of Uzbekistan and is the main source of employment. In addition, family farms produce most of the meat and vegetables consumed by Uzbek citizens. Therefore, we are focusing on those reforms that allow these dehkan farms to adapt to a changing climate, protect the environment, produce healthy food and become part of local and global value chains. Grant funding, together with other European Union initiatives such as GSP+, will also help to increase exports to the European Union," the Ambassador stressed The EU in Uzbekistan by Charlotte Adrian.

The sustainable agro-food sector is one of the three strategic priorities of the Multi-year Indicative Program The EU for Uzbekistan (2021-2027). Other priorities include effective governance and inclusive, green and digital growth. Since 2021, the program has already allocated about 76 million euros (almost 1 trillion soums) to Uzbekistan.

Earlier The EU has already supported agricultural sector reforms with a budget of 32.5 million euros in the period from 2020 to 2023.
