Uzbekistan and Hungary to join efforts to preserve ecosystem

This will be possible thanks to Uzbekistan’s cooperation with the Drought Prevention Institute, established in Budapest.

According to forecasts by the Eurasian Bank for Reconstruction and Development, by 2050 Central Asia may face a water deficit that will increase by 30%. This will lead to serious consequences for the region’s agriculture and ecosystem. The Central Asian countries are working together to address this problem, implementing projects and initiatives at both the regional and national levels.

Last year, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev drew attention to the fact that countries with similar climates and soils use 2-3 times less water to irrigate cotton fields. In response, scientists and specialists in Uzbekistan began actively introducing advanced water management methods to minimize losses and increase water efficiency.

As part of these efforts, cooperation was launched with the Drought Prevention Institute, established in 2023 in Budapest with the support of the Organization of Turkic States.
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto emphasized that the institute brings together the expertise of world-class Hungarian engineers in the field of water resources management. In mid-August, Uzbek Ambassador Oybek Shahavdinov met with the Director of the Drought Prevention Institute Laszlo Orlos to discuss bilateral cooperation, exchange of experience and technology.
What results can be expected from this cooperation?
  • reducing water losses in agriculture in Uzbekistan;
  • increasing crop yields and sustainability of the agricultural sector in the face of climate change;
  • introducing drought monitoring and early warning systems;
  • expanding opportunities for research in the fight against desertification and soil degradation.

Each of us can also make a contribution. To do this, it is enough to save water in everyday life and use it rationally. Refusal of plastic bottles and switching to reusable containers also reduces the burden on water resources. Supporting environmental initiatives and participating in water purification activities will help keep water clean and accessible for future generations. It should be noted that the recent opening of direct flights between Tashkent and Budapest by Qanot Sharq will significantly facilitate the interaction of specialists from both countries. This will allow for effective resolution of environmental issues. Flights are operated every Sunday, and from September, flights will be added on Wednesdays.
