Uzbekistan has been elected to the Council of FAO— the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Uzbekistan has been elected to the Council of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for 2028–2029 for the first time. The elections for council members took place at the organization's headquarters in Rome on July 4, as reported by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Council consists of 49 member states, elected for up to three years with consideration for geographical distribution. Within its mandate, the Council discusses the budget, FAO programs, and makes key decisions and recommendations for the organization's conference.
"Membership in the FAO Council opens up significant opportunities for Uzbekistan in shaping global agricultural and food policies, developing regulatory documents and standards, presenting national and regional initiatives, as well as promoting projects and attracting additional financial resources," the statement noted.
FAO is a specialized UN agency coordinating international efforts to combat hunger. The organization has 195 members, including 194 countries and the European Union, and operates in more than 130 countries.
In 2014, FAO opened a representative office in Uzbekistan.
